One of my favorite things to hear is that someone can finally “wake up like this” because their brows still look great even after a year. That’s exactly why a consultation matters. Consultation services are short, goal-focused appointments, usually 30 minutes, that match you to the right semi-permanent makeup plan and clarify outcomes, timing, and pricing before you commit. If you’re in Downtown San Mateo, especially near the South B Street corridor, a quick consult can save you weeks of second-guessing. Below, I’ll break down the types of consultations I do, typical consultation charges you’ll see around San Mateo, what we’ll cover, and how to choose between virtual and in-person.
Who books a PMU consultation (and what they’re trying to solve)
Most people don’t come in because they want “a consultation.” They come in because they’re tired of drawing brows every morning, or they want a natural lip tint but don’t know what will heal well on their skin. Some have old permanent makeup that pulled warm or left a tint over time and want a realistic correction plan.
A consult is for you if you want clear answers without surprise costs. The Peninsula lifestyle is busy. Between Caltrain, US-101 traffic, work, and family schedules, a short planning appointment makes it easier to decide what’s worth your time. And if you’re coming in from Burlingame, Hillsborough, Foster City, Belmont, or San Carlos, it’s also a smart way to confirm you’re booking the right service before you make the trip into San Mateo.
Quick reality check: If you’re unsure about brow shape, lip color, previous pigment, or healing expectations, a consult is usually faster than booking the “most popular” service and hoping it fits.
In-person vs. virtual consultation in San Mateo: which one fits your life?
I keep consultations simple: we look at your features, talk through your daily routine, and make a plan that feels like you, not a cookie-cutter template.
In-person consultation
This is the best option if you want hands-on guidance for semi-permanent makeup. We can get more precise with things like brow mapping, checking old pigment, and talking through shape and undertones in real lighting. If you’re already in Downtown San Mateo near South B Street, it’s an easy add-on before dinner or errands around the central downtown retail district.
Virtual consultation
Virtual is great when you need direction but don’t want to drive or coordinate childcare. We’ll still cover goals, timeline, and what style makes sense for your skin and routine. If you want to consult with me first because you’re new to PMU, this is often the easiest first step.
Consultation services at Lilas Marie Studio (and who each is best for)
These are the two consultation options I keep on my menu. Both are focused on semi-permanent makeup planning, especially brows and lip blush. I’m appointment-only, and I keep things calm, private, and un-rushed.
In-person Consultation
This is a face-to-face planning session for semi-permanent makeup enhancements. We’ll talk through the look you want, what you’re trying to simplify in your routine, and what’s realistic for your skin and features. I’ll guide you on shape, color direction, and what technique makes sense so you don’t leave guessing.
Best for: brows or lip blush planning when you want the most precise feedback, especially if you have sparse brows, old pigment, or you’re nervous and want to feel fully informed before booking.
Deposit note: Deposits are required for in-person consultations, and the deposit value goes toward any booked service.
Virtual Consultation
A virtual consult gives you real direction without the commute. We’ll go over what you want to change, what you want to keep natural, and how semi-permanent makeup could fit your day-to-day. I’ll answer the questions people always have at the start, including comfort, healing, and how we keep results soft and believable.
Best for: busy schedules, out-of-area planning, or anyone who wants to talk it through before committing to an in-studio appointment.

What real results come from a good consult: natural brows, nailed color, fewer do-overs
A consultation isn’t just talking. It’s where we prevent the most common regrets, like choosing a brow style that doesn’t heal well on your skin or picking a lip color that feels too bold once it settles.
People come to me for natural-looking results. I hear it a lot in follow-ups: brows that look like hair again, shape that fits their face, and color choices that make sense with undertones. One client came in with very sparse brows and old PMU that had left a red tint, and we mapped out a correction plan that got them back to a natural brow they felt excited to wake up to.
“I get compliments on my brows on how natural they look... It’s been over a year and the brows are still in great shape!”
one of our regulars
That “natural” result is usually the outcome of the consult, not luck. We use the consult to decide on shade and shape, talk through your comfort level, and set a plan you can actually stick with. People also tell me they feel calmer once they understand the steps, which matters a lot if you’re already nervous or you have a low pain tolerance.
A simple walk-through: what happens when you sit down for a consultation
When you come in, the first thing I do is ask what you’re trying to change. Less makeup time? More symmetry? A soft tint that looks like you, just a little fresher? Then we look at what you’re working with right now, including any previous permanent makeup and how it has faded.
If we’re talking brows, we’ll discuss shape, thickness, and how natural you want the finish to be. For lip blush, we’ll talk about color goals and what “natural” means to you. I’ll also explain the steps and healing timeline in plain language. You’ll leave with a clear recommendation, a general timeline, and next steps for booking.
Comfort matters: People regularly tell me I’m gentle and thorough, and that they feel relaxed and informed by the end of the conversation.
Consultation charges in San Mateo: what you’ll usually pay (and why)
Consultation charges in San Mateo vary depending on the kind of planning you’re doing. For beauty and aesthetic consultations, you’ll commonly see a range depending on the provider. A quick virtual consult often sits on the lower end. An in-person consult that includes mapping or detailed planning is often higher, especially when it’s applied toward a future service.
At Lilas Marie Studio, I require a deposit for in-person consultations, and that deposit goes toward your booked service. That keeps the schedule fair and makes sure your consult time is reserved just for you.
Good to know: If you’re trying to fit a consult between Caltrain and everything else on your calendar, those details make the day smoother.
What to bring so your consultation is fast and actually useful
You don’t need a folder of paperwork, but a little prep helps. Bring a short list of what you’re using on your skin, especially around the brow area and lips. If you have previous PMU, a quick note on when you had it done and any touch-ups helps too.
- Photos: 2 to 4 inspiration photos that feel realistic for your features. If you can, pick images in natural lighting.
- Your routine: Tell me how much time you want to spend on makeup daily and what you never want to fuss with again.
- Any old pigment details: If you’ve got fading, warmth, or a tint you don’t love, call it out. Color correction starts with honesty.
- Questions: Bring the awkward ones. Numbing, healing, “will it look too much, ” all of it.
If you’re deciding who to consult with in Downtown San Mateo, here’s how I work
I’m a solo, owner-operated studio, and I built Lilas Marie Studio around one thing: results that still feel like you. People come back because I take my time, explain what I’m doing, and stay responsive when questions come up before or after an appointment. One client even mentioned my expertise showed up in simple things like texting beforehand. That’s important. You shouldn’t have to chase someone down for clarity.
I’m located in Downtown San Mateo, close to the South B Street retail corridor, so it’s easy to pair your consult with a walk through Central Park or a meal nearby. If you’re commuting in on Caltrain, a targeted consult is often the cleanest way to plan without losing your whole day.
Ready for a clear plan? Book a virtual consultation if you want direction first. Choose an in-person consultation if you want detailed mapping and the most precise feedback. If you’re not sure, tell me your goal, brows or lips, and what you’re nervous about. I’ll point you to the right starting point.
